Jewels in the crown

Article Abstract:

The Central Park Wildlife Center in New York, mainly designed as an English garden, started displaying animals due to public demand. Poor management and lack of financial assistance led to the failure of the Central Park Zoo, Flushing Meadows Zoo and Prospect Park Zoo, which were handed over to the Wildlife Conservation Society in 1970. The society's zoo design team transformed the zoo to provide a naturalistic environment. The Central Park Zoo was opened in 1980, Queens Zoo in 1992 and Prospect Park Zoo in 1993. These zoos could hold only small animals and not big ones. The Central Park Wildlife Center has become a famous landmark in New York City.

Footsteps across Africa

Article Abstract:

The Wildlife Conservation Society celebrated its centennial in 1996 with several safaris crisscrossing east Africa. One hundred eleven participants drove and ballooned across the countryside for three weeks with scientists explaining the society's past and present work. The participants returned with a deep appreciation for the efforts the society has made toward conserving wildlife.

An enchanted forest: the Tisch Children's Zoo, in New York City, is pint-size and picture perfect

Article Abstract:

The Tisch Children's Zoo in New York City, which opened on September 24, 1997, was made possible by the generous donations of the families of Laurence A. and Preston R. Tisch. Six-year-old boys and girls are what the developers had in mind when they designed the zoo, but people of all ages will likely find themselves inspired to learn more about the animals.
