Observer gender and observation bias in animal behavior research: Experimental tests with red-backed salamanders

Article Abstract:

Multiple observers of aggression and foraging behavior in red-backed salamanders, Plethodon cinereus, are sued to examine observation biases related to the gender of the observer. The results suggest that observation biases with respect to observer gender may exist for some behavioral variables and hence the behaviors should be carefully screened for consistency and repeatability prior to formal data collection.

Both learning and heritability affect foraging behaviour of red-backed salamanders, Plethodon cinereus

Article Abstract:

Three experiments to test the main hypotheses are conducted to investigate the effects of learning and heritability on foraging behaviour in red-backed salamander. Results reveal that learning, at all ages, plays an important role in successful foraging and that difference in foraging efficiency between individuals might have a genetic component.
