Reduced hippocampal LTP and spatial learning in mice lacking NMDA receptor epsilon-1 subunit

Article Abstract:

Considerable reduction of the N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) receptor channel current occurs when the mouse epsilon-1 subunit gene is subjected to targeted disruption. The targeted disruption also results in long-term potentiation at the hippocampal CA1 synapses. The NMDA receptor channel is involved in synaptic plasticity and helps maintain the process of memory, learning and development in mice and other higher-order animals. The targeted disruption causes a deficiency in spatial learning.

Interaction with the NMDA receptor locks CaMKII in an active conformation

Article Abstract:

It has been established that regulated calcium- and calmodulin-dependent protein kinase II interaction with two sites on the N-methyl-D-aspartate receptor subunit NR2B gives a mechanism for the glutamate-prompted translocation of the kinase to the synapse in hippocampal neurons. This interaction can given rise to further forms of potentiation.

Global changes to the ubiquitin system in Huntington's disease

Article Abstract:

A mass-spectrometry-based method is used for studying polyubiquitin chains and has shown that the abundance of these chains is a faithful endogenous biomarker of ubiquitin-proteasome system (UPS) function. Huntington's disease (HD) is shown to be linked to global changes in the ubiquitin system to a very large extent.
