Visual cortical mechanisms detecting focal orientation discontinuities

Article Abstract:

The presence of neural organization in the primary visual cortex indicates a distinct mechanism for detecting local orientation discontinuities. Incorporation of a surrounding field at a different orientation increases the output of stimulated patch-suppressed cells via both disinhibitory and active facilitatory mechanisms. A novel mechanism using orientation-dependent information over adjacent areas of visual space determines the detection of focal orientation discontinuities.

Maps of time and space

Article Abstract:

X. Wang and colleagues revealed that the spatial characteristics of neuronal receptive fields and maps represent the temporal synchrony of stimulation. The alterations in responses and maps are due to cortical mechanisms and any change in maps may induce spatiotemporal skills. The sequence of cortical neurons are set up during the development, and afferent input timing is critical for constructing projections in the adult and developing cortex.
