Wise fathers

Article Abstract:

Observation of bluegill sunfish parent males reveals two cues the fish use to determine the likelihood of their paternity: the occurrence of 'sneakers' (other males that sneak into the nest and fertilize eggs during spawning), and water-borne scents that occur at hatching. Proof of these cues is observed in that the males' level of protective behavior toward the hatchlings increases with their level of certainty of paternity.

Decisions about parental care in response to perceived paternity

Article Abstract:

Study of bluegill sunfish reveals that parental males use cuckoldry and scent cues to determine their paternity in the nest. Manipulation of these cues controls the level of parenting the male fish will provide to its young, showing how the fish makes its behavioural decisions.

Sexually antagonistic genetic variation for fitness in red deer

Article Abstract:

The study of sexually antagonistic fitness variation in natural red deer population showed that this criterion for selection would have a profound effect on the operation and maintenance of genetic variation in natural populations.
