Urgent safety probe after tower block fire
Article Abstract:
The Building Regulations dealing with the design and installation of external cladding on tower blocks, covered in Approved Document B of the Building Regulations, are to be reviewed by the UK government. This follows a fire in a tower block in Irvine, Scotland, in which one person died. The fire started on the fifth floor and spread rapidly to the floors above. There is concern that the cavity between the cladding and the concrete, or other material, behind it forms an air channel that encourages fire to spread upwards.

Foreign outpost
Article Abstract:
Latest information technology makes it possible for construction companies to operate on an international basis. Companies which have offices or joint ventures abroad can now work on a single project in different time zones, for example, and it is possible to outsource parts of a project to parts of the world where labour costs are low. Many large practices are now using their information technology systems on an informal basis to spread the workload among different offices.

How did they do that?
Article Abstract:
The roof of a new distribution centre in Avonmouth, England, is being assembled from 65 mt lengths of aluminium. Drinks producer Matthew Clark's national distribution centre is dwarfed by a 90 mt crane with a 60 mt jib that is hoisting the huge sections into place. The lengths of aluminium are not pre-cut but are profiled on site. The standing-seam symmetrical roof occupies an area of 27,776 sq mt.
