Balancing act
Article Abstract:
Hospital ventilation systems must fulfill their inherent task of providing adequate volumes of temperate and clean air, as they are bound by various regulatory directives. Among the ventilation systems recommended by the Canadian Standard Association for medical facilities, are single zone; multiple zone; dual duct; terminal reheat; variable air volume; unit ventilator; induction; fan coil; and unitary. However, several designers of health-care facilities are discussing some special ventilation systems, including ultraviolet germicidal irradiation; horizontal or vertical laminar flow in operating rooms, and cfm/patient airflow rate design, to substitute the conventional air-change rate process.

Elegant and efficient: pumping chilled water
Article Abstract:
The energy efficiency and performance of chilled water pumping systems can be improved by a knowledge of their evolution and the first law of thermodynamics. The first chilled-water systems had one evaporator and a small number of load devices. The innovation of valve controls which could control flow, however, resulting in the freezing and rupturing of tubes. This problem was solved through the development of the three-way valve in which flow could varied through the coil while allowing for constant flows along the circuit and chillers.

Bigger, for the better
Article Abstract:
Large-orifice sprinklers are shown to provide design advantages adn effective fire protection. Studies indicate that K-25 sprinklers can be utilized to protect flammable combustible liquids without the use of in- rack sprinkler systems. K-25 is also being evaluated for its potential in eliminating the need for in-rack sprinklers in certain arrays of highly flammable and combustible materials.
