Moving toward 50 percent diversion

Article Abstract:

Efforts to recycle a large proportion of municipal solid waste (MSW) in Maine have seen mixed results. In 1997, municipalities and businesses recycled 679,878 tons of materials out of a total MSW stream of 1,635,136 tons, with the recycling rate across the state at around 42%. Around 70% of the waste stream not being recycled is incinerated, with the rest going to landfill. Communities are now beginning to reassess their solid waste programmes, and many are considering 'Pay as You Throw' systems to limit waste requiring disposal and boost recycling/composting levels.

Compost education and research in Canada

Article Abstract:

Olds College's Composting Technology Center (CTC) in Olds, Alberta is the sole Canadian educational institute providing compost technology training. CTC was developed in 1991 to study the feasibility of including a composting curriculum to the courses offered at the college. It evolved into a self-sustaining program and was officially launched in May 1995, offering certificate and diploma programs in composting. Meanwhile, research works are focused on Forestry, Agriculture, Petroleum, Manufacturing and Municipal projects.

Learning the composting ropes

Article Abstract:

The University of Maine Cooperate Extension Compost School offers a two-part course to people requiring compost training, made up of a three-day classroom/laboratory stage and a two-day field trip. The curriculum is designed to give a basic introducing to composting, but some elements are aimed at more experienced composters. Care is taken to ensure that the curriculum is sufficient flexible to address specific situations.
