Insurers and reinsurers hit financially by the disasters that have occurred since 1988 are lacking detailed risk information necessary to accurately evaluate the catastrophic risks. To lower operating costs, insurance companies and reinsurers have eliminated a large portion of their detailed information services. The integration of personal computers and disaster models can help insurance and reinsurance companies improve their hazard assessments before a disaster strikes.

Sales and underwriting -- a winning combination

The unification of the sales force and the underwriting departments has proved to be a big step toward improving sales responses and customer service. In the past, sales and underwriting functioned as checks upon each other's worst tendencies, with underwriting concentrating on risk management and sales personnel concentrating on volume. With automation of the workflow, these two departments can work together to improve the bottom line.

Blue Shield of California and Electronic Data Systems Inc renegotiated their deal, signing a new six-year contract that changes EDS' responsibilities and the way it is paid. Most insurance industry outsourcing contracts are for computer services.
