Would You Buy a Burger from This Man?
Article Abstract:
Using celebrities in advertising to sell a product or service has become popular in many ad campaigns. Probably one of the most successful spokesmen for a company has been John Houseman for the investment firm of Smith Barney. The important thing about using a celebrity for an ad campaign is to know if the celebrity is reflecting the basic advertising strategy or if he or she is just being used for their showbiz appeal. Some of the marketing criteria ad agencies use to determine a celebrity's appropriateness are: attractivenss, honesty, age-group association, popularity, recognizability, and likeability. Some analysts feel that as the economy recovers we may see fewer personalities on commercials and more basic advertising creativity not centered around a particular person.

Varieties of transition: emerging economies
Article Abstract:
David Lane defends socialism in his book, 'The Rise and Fall of State Socialism: Industrial Society and the State.' He starts by differentiating between the two types of socialism, namely, the 'soft' and 'hard' socialism. 'Soft' capitalism's main concern is to reform capitalism while 'hard' socialism seeks equality, public ownership and community. Lane ends by explaining the downfall of market socialism in the Soviet Union, China, Czechoslovakia and Yugoslavia and provides statistics to demonstrate the changing social structure in socialist societies.

Fertility decline in the developed world: where will it end?
Article Abstract:
Women in several developed countries are bearing more children than is forecast by the total fertility rates. Young women in these nations are anticipated to have a sufficient number of births to reach the replacement level. The total fertility rate could remain below 2.1 for a considerable time in countries where women are bearing children at the replacement level. Moreover, the fertility level that will prevail during the absence of tempor distortions differs among post-transitional nations.
