Broadway a la Suisse

Article Abstract:

The staging of the British musical 'The Phantom of the Opera' at Basle, Switzerland's Musical Theatre Messe is expected to be a success. This is contrary to views held by Swiss theater insiders that the future is not so bright for musical extravaganzas in the country. The Sfr.25 million Andrew Lloyd Webber play, which is being played in both German and English, has attracted about 450,000 theater-goers. One reason for the success is the Basle Musical Theater Messe which has undergone an expensive renovation to make it one of the most modern European musical theaters.
