Germany in Asia

Article Abstract:

There has been a decrease in German imports from Asia and a boost in exports to South East Asia between Jan and Mar 1992, indicating that Germany may be reducing its trade deficit with Asia. Excluding a deficit problem with Japan, Germany had earlier maintained a fair trade balance with the rest of Asia. The imbalance occurred only after unification when the German companies were busy feeding the domestic market. With the initial post-unification consumer boom slowing down, Germany has been able to focus more on exports.

A hands-on approach

Article Abstract:

German Foreign Minister Klaus Kinkel attributes Germany's improved trade balance with East Asia to his govt's 1993 policy initiative promoting ties and business development with the region. He recently hosted China's foreign minister and communist party chief, a visit that saw $1.35 billion in business deals signed, despite the June sojourn in Bonn of Taiwan's Economics Minister. Germany is now Singapore's third-largest trading partner and is forging new links to Malaysia and Vietnam.
