Machines that learn to think

Article Abstract:

The University of California at Davis Campus' Kazuo Yamazaki is developing 'mechatronics', a new field of research aimed at developing superior machine tool controls by using advanced electronics and mechanical engineering technologies. The research center is conducting studies that will focus on simplifying machine tool operation to improve overall machining productivity. The research studies are hoped to produce faster and more accurate machine tools that will have reduced energy requirements and require minimal machine operator attention.

Export control hinders sales to China

Article Abstract:

Exporters of machine-tools in the US have been struggling to ship their products to China, as the government intensifies its export-control policy to the East Asian nation. Former assistant secretary of Trade Administration Paul Freedenberg claims that local companies are experiencing massive delays in obtaining licensing permits for their products. Freedenberg adds that such delays do not only create trade hassles, but generate negative image among foreign traders, as well.

The adoption of advanced manufacturing technology proved instrumental in facilitating the production of innovative machine tools in Haas Automation Inc. Through the use of a probe inspection system, the company conducts part size control evaluation even during unmanned operations. The system is equipped with an automatic feedback which allows routine tool size compensation and maintain tolerances within the range of 0.0001 inch more or less.
