A year in Bosnia: what was achieved

Article Abstract:

A major achievement of the UN Peacekeeping operation in Bosnia is the creation of conditions for the peaceful resolution of the conflict. The UN redefined its peacekeeping mission in Bosnia to include humanitarian efforts within the context of a civil war situation. In the absence of political momentum in the former Yugoslavia, this new approach sought greater levels of enforcement such as the use of NATO air power, to achieve the UN mandate of sustaining human lives. The humanitarian mission of UN peacekeepers has great relevance for the future.
