Bearing the weight: the kayayoo, Ghana's working girl child

Article Abstract:

The kayayoos or head-load carriers of Ghana are women and girls who transport goods in the absence of modern technology and equipment. They are very useful workers for Ghana's urban informal sector. However, kayayoos were interviewed and were found to be working under harsh conditions. Social work aspires to alleviate their problems by influencing policies for education and income-generating activities in their favor.

The shadow of Tsoai: Autobiographical bear power in N. Scott Momaday's The Ancient Child (1989)

Article Abstract:

'The Ancient Child', by N. Scott Momaday, is the story of a boy who changes into a bear and torments his sisters. The bear is important to the life of the author and to the character, Set, in the book, but for Set and the reader there is ambiguity. There is a connection between the discovery of the ancestral bear nature of both Momoday and Seth and the Kiowa religion.
