Social genealogies commented on and compared: an instrument for observing social mobility processes in the 'Longue Duree.'

Article Abstract:

The method of 'Social Genealogies Commented on and Compared' (SGCC), provides a new technique for observing social mobility. The instrument of observation has an impact on the construction of the object or processes being studied. This method is important since studies of social mobility depend upon the collection of data about social genealogies and family histories. It focuses on generational transmissions, siblings' life course and women's role in the lives of their kin.

Medicine, disability and family in an affluent Arab society: the case of Zahira Qetub

Article Abstract:

This article examines the medical treatment of a young Arab girl from an affluent Arab community who was suffering from a severe congenital defect. The author, exploring the social aspects of medical treatment, maintains that even though the family was able to afford sophisticated treatment the girl's illness created conflict between her, her family, and the physicians, resulting in the girl's preference of the care of the staff over being with her family.
